Sci-Hi and Bionic Design

Posted December 5th, 2011 by Robert Meeker with No Comments

Students applied principles of bionic design and mechanical biomimicry through the use of commonly found items (i.e. vinyl tubing, string, tape).  Specifically designed to reinforce the idea behind how tendons function in the body (which directly aligns with current 11th and 12th grade Ohio science curriculum).

Each Sci-Hi² member was given a limited supply budget and had two days to create a non-powered machine that could do four tasks that require different types of dexterity:

    1. Replicate a drawing with their machines by grasping a marker;
    2. Carry an egg through an obstacle course;
    3. Throw a Frisbee into a target;
    4. Roll five dice to try to roll a total of 15 or higher.
