Community advocates are kicking off a campaign today to create the Food District @ Weinland Park, a local-foods hub with a processing plant, employment center, co-op market and space for entrepreneurs. Supporters say the plan feeds two kinds of hunger: Local-food devotees want a better regional food system, and the Weinland Park neighborhood — improving but still impoverished — craves jobs.

House & garden tours
Twelve community gardens in Franklin County will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in a self-guided tour. All are members of the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ Growing to Green Hub Gardens initiative, which identifies well-established gardens and urban farms that serve their communities by providing fresh food and educational programs.
