Youth and Family Service
T.E.E.N. (Teen Education and Employment Network)
The T.E.E.N. program is an exciting program designed by and for teens to provide opportunities for educational enrichment, career development, leadership development, and personal and social skills. During the school year, approximately 100 youth are enrolled in the T.E.E.N. Program. During the summer, approximately 300 youth are enrolled in the T.E.E.N. Program’s Summer Teen Employment Program (S.T.E.P.). Click on this link to hear what our teens think and say about Godman Guild's T.E.E.N program: http://www.vimeo.com/8048548
The T.E.E.N. Program now has a Flickr page to share program pictures with participants, parents, employers and the community. Please visit today to see our youth in action: http://www.flickr.com/photos/teenprogram/.
T.E.E.N. Mission
To guide, encourage, and support teens in reaching their fullest potential by facilitating positive growthand development in the area of Leadership, Education, Work Experience and personal/ social skills.
T.E.E.N. Vision
“Teens will become Empowered, Productive, and Successful Adults.”
Educational Enrichment
Tutoring sessions are conducted through EDGE (Educating, Developing, Graduating, and Experiencing). EDGE focuses on skills instruction in Reading, Writing, Mathematics, homework help, test taking strategies, and Ohio Graduation Test preparation. Incentives/cash stipends are awarded for attendance and performance.
Personal and Social Skill Development
T.E.E.N. also focuses on personal and social skill development during the school year. Each teen is paired with a T.E.E.N. Advocate with whom they can set reachable goals. Teens also participate in breakout sessions, where they discuss a variety of topics.
Participants in the T.E.E.N. program have the opportunity to travel to places in and outside the Columbus community. These trips allow many teens to experience new places and things while also opening their eyes to new cultures and opportunities. For many teens, these trips are the first of hopefully many more exciting and life-changing adventures that they will have while participating in T.E.E.N. Past trips have included Washington D.C. and Chicago.
Career Exploration and Development
During the school year, a Career Assessment and Inventory is administered to youth and will provide possible career options related to individual interests. Introductory, intermediate and advanced classes are offered in employment skills and financial literacy throughout the school year. In the employment classes, attention is given to job readiness training, such as resume writing, and mock interviews. In financial literacy Classes, activities are designed to teach teens how to use a checking and savings account, balance a checkbook and create and work with a budget. Incentives/Cash stipends are awarded to those that have successfully completed class requirements.
During the Summer Teen Employment Program (S.T.E.P.), youth learn basic job readiness skills and financial management. In addition, youth are given access to explore many different career industries with guest speakers from local and national businesses, project-based internships and basic work experiences. The T.E.E.N. Program has built strong partnerships throughout the years with many local employers to ensure that each youth gains valuable work experience that will lead to their successful entry into the workforce. Work experiences last 6-8 weeks and teens are allowed to work 20—25 hours a week.
Leadership Development
To ensure that the teen's voices are being heard by both the staff and the community, Godman Guild's T.E.E.N. program offers Program Improvement Planning (PIP) Committee. The Committeel serves as an avenue for students to develop leadership skills and provides a strong foundation for future success.
