Godman Guild is hiring a Discovery Day Camp Director at Camp Mary Orton for the Summer of 2020. This is a seasonal position for a camp that operates over the summer only. The camp program begins at 8:30 AM and ends at 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with weekly sessions beginning in June 4th and running through mid- August.

This position will begin mid-April on an as-available basis and run through end of summer. Additional Part time hours may be available after that date.

The camp director is responsible for the day to day operation of the Discovery Day Camp, including curriculum planning and counselor supervision.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Participate in pre-camp training and planning.

  • Develop camp activities, including nature exploration, games, crafts, awards and recognition, and other activities with the assistance of CMO staff

  • Collect and organize camper and counselor records.

  • Assign groups for campers and counselors

  • Ongoing evaluation of counselors, giving and listening to feedback.

  • Take primary responsibility for the health, well-being and happiness of campers.

  • Assist with urgent behavioral needs of campers.

  • Run an organized check-in and check-out process.

  • Engage with parents and the Director of Business Development regarding concerns, challenges and pertinent updates on campers.

  • Submit all paperwork in a timely manner.

  • Lead by setting a good example for counselors and campers.

  • Maintain CPR/First Aid training

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Work Experience and Education

  • High school degree plus two years of college

  • Requires 2 years of experience in summer camp

  • Requires working knowledge of nature programming, childhood development, camp operations, Google docs, MS Office

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds.

  • Strong communication skills with temperament and ability to convey information to individuals at all levels of skill development and cultural backgrounds

  • Strong work ethic and high level of trust

  • Self-starter with strong self-directing and time management skills

  • Valid drivers license with current automobile insurance & able to pass license check to drive agency vehicle

  • Ability to supervise summer counseling staff

  • Ability to learn techniques and procedures

  • Ability to spend approximately 80% of the time on the job standing, bending and lifting

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in formal and informal settings

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize competing deadlines and perform assignments gracefully with frequent interruptions.

  • Ability to perform duties while outdoors and exposed to a variety of weather conditions

  • Ability to act quickly and decisively in emergencies

  • Ability to convey a sense of fun while leading a learning activity

  • Ability to collaborate with others

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
